The three frames side by side
| Option | Red-iron steel | Wood post-frame | Stud-frame + metal skin |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Welded or bolted steel columns and rafters on a slab | Treated wood posts or columns with engineered trusses, often on piers or brackets | Conventional 2×4 or 2×6 walls and trusses |
| Clear span | Widest; suits big shops | Wide, depends on trusses | Shorter; more interior walls |
| Termites | Frame isn't food | Treated posts and good detailing matter | Standard house protection |
| Interior finish | Furring or framed walls inside the steel | Framed or girted walls | Easiest; builds like a house |
| Engineering in Madison Co. | Sealed drawings required | Sealed drawings required | Trusses need engineering |

What about cost?
We couldn't find a dated, reliable study that prices the frames against each other, and builder claims conflict. What we can say: HomeGuide puts complete barndos at $65–160 per sq ft nationally and $62–154 in Alabama, with kits at $20–35 per sq ft for materials alone (HomeGuide, Jan 2026). The frame is only part of that. Insulation, interior walls and finish make up most of the bill, and each frame changes those. Get two quotes to the same plan and finish level and compare the totals. Our cost guide has finish-level ranges.
Termites in Alabama
Alabama Extension reports subterranean termite infestations rising across the state, and Formosan termites, mostly a coastal pest, now spreading into central Alabama (Alabama Extension, 2021). A steel frame takes the structure off the menu, but doors, trim, cabinets and any wood walls inside still need protection. With wood posts, ask about the treatment rating, whether posts sit in the ground or on concrete, and the termite plan.
Engineering and the standards behind it
Post-frame buildings have their own engineering practices. The National Frame Building Association's guide specification calls for post foundations designed to ASABE EP 486 and metal-clad roof and wall diaphragms to EP 484 (NFBA, 2023). Steel building packages come with their own engineering for the site's loads. Either way, the stamped drawings go in with your county permit, and the inspector checks the footings and framing against them (Madison County). More on permits on our zoning and permits page.
Condensation under metal
Humid air hitting a cold steel roof or wall panel condenses, and that water drips, rusts fasteners and soaks insulation. This is a frame-neutral problem: it is about the metal skin. Closed-cell spray foam at about R-6 per inch is air-impermeable and acts as a vapour retarder; open-cell foam at about R-3.6 per inch is not one (DOE Building America). That is why many barndo builders spray closed-cell foam directly on the metal. Details on our insulation and HVAC page.
Questions to ask a builder
- Why this frame for my plan, and what would the other one cost?
- What clear span do I get in the shop?
- Who is the engineer of record, and are the drawings sealed for my site?
- How are posts or columns anchored to the slab or footings?
- How do you stop condensation on the metal?
Common questions
Is a steel or wood barndominium better?
Neither is better everywhere. Steel suits wide shops and resists termites; wood post-frame is common and economical; stud-frame finishes most like a standard house. Compare complete quotes to the same plan.
Does a post-frame barndo need an engineer in Madison County?
Yes. The county asks for sealed engineered drawings for post-frame and metal buildings and for roof trusses (Madison County).
Do termites matter if I build with steel?
Less for the frame, but trim, cabinets and any wood walls inside are still at risk. Alabama Extension reports termite activity expanding in the state (Alabama Extension).
